Model the loop, not a one-time choice

Flood adaptation is not one isolated decision. A household interprets risk, weighs protection or insurance, experiences a hazard, absorbs damage, and enters the next period with different resources and exposure.

A coupled model represents both tracks. Human decisions alter vulnerability. Environmental events alter finances, experience, and later perception. The meaning lies in their interaction over time.

Keep state transitions inspectable

Each transition should name its inputs, decision rule, validation, and outputs. Owner and renter pathways need distinct constraints because access to structural adaptation and financial responsibility differ.

Repeated scenarios help distinguish a persistent mechanism from one stochastic trajectory, but repetition does not remove uncertainty in calibration or assumptions.

Failure modes to report

Feedback models can double-count damage, let actions occur without resources, update variables in the wrong order, or treat uncertain behavioral parameters as fixed truth. Inconsistent time steps can create convincing but invalid dynamics.

Practical implication

The same discipline applies to multi-agent and AI-for-science systems. When generated decisions change a shared environment, evaluation must include downstream state, delayed effects, and the next decisions produced by that altered state.
